Dick Florin Wins 1970 World Putting Championship
Herb Hull Clinches Amateur Title
Dick Florin of Atlanta, Georgia, defeated defending World Champion Rick Smith of Indianapolis, Indiana, in a thrilling sudden-death playoff to win the $15,000 first prize in the $100,000 World Putting Championship at the Freeport, Grand Bahama Island, Putt-Putt Golf Course.
Florin and Smith produced an exciting final round. The lead changed hands several times. Finally, at the 18th hole, Florin needed an ace to break the tie and secure a victory. But the Atlanta banker's 30-foot putt missed its mark by two inches.
On the first hole of the sudden-death playoff which followed, Smith putted wide of his mark. Florin's ace on the same hole clinched the victory.
Smith, the defending champion and the pre-tournament favorite of many, was forced to settle for the $5,000 second prize. The 21-year-old Purdue University student jacked his earning in putting to $37,865. Smith commented, "You can't feel too badly about it (the loss to Florin). You feel like you just bought the fellow a new house."
And Florin's $15,000 prize will make a substantial down payment on that new house. "It's the best thing that has ever happened to me," remarked Florin. "I really can't believe it." Prior to this tournament, Florin's career winnings during eight years as a pro were $7,685.
En route to the World Putting Championship title, Florin overthrew Eddie Austin, Lake Charles, Louisiana; Tom O'Brien, Cleveland, Ohio; Roger Moore, Atlanta; Bob Macomber, Dayton, Ohio; W D Gullick, Glen Burnie, Maryland; and Richard Buchan, Henderson, North Carolina.
Florin, Smith, Austin, and O'Brien were joined in these final rounds of the World Putting Championship by Daryl Hayden, Indianapolis; Chuck Roberts, Fort Collins, Colorado; and Gary Understein, Bethesda, Maryland. In addition, Herb Hull, an amateur from Alliance, Ohio, defeated Denver's Mark Wilson. Hull aced the final hole to close out his match and win the exhibition trip around the world.
