Texan Doyle Smith Captures $2,000 Western Open in Denver

Doyle Smith, a course owner from Dallas, TX, put on a strong finish in the $2,000 PPA Tournament in Denver's suburb of Aurora, CO, to win the Western Open Putting Championship with a 28-under-par 116.

Smith had rounds of 23-27-28-29 at the Denver Putt-Putt to pick up the first place check of $500 in a field of 51 professionals.

Carl Strickland of Atlanta, GA, was runner-up with a 118 while newly-crowned National Champion Vance Randall of Asheville, NC, tied for third place with Neil Connor of Greenville, SC, shooting a net 119. Pieter van Heerden of Cape Town, South Africa was fifth with a 120 and received $125.

Amateur Terry Wong of Westminster, CO, won the amateur division by scoring an ace on the first extra hole of a sudden-death playoff against Ross Kooney of Boulder, CO. Each had shot a 122 during the regulation 72 holes.
