Condy Roberson Claims First Tourney Win of 1965
A field of 45 pros and 15 amateurs invaded the 54-hole course in Hyattsville, MD, located just outside of the nation's capitol. After the first 18 holes, Condy Robertson of Savannah, GA found himself tied for the lead with Ray Rayfield of Birmingham, AL. Both putters, constant threats on the tour, fired 7-under-par, 29's.
While other top names in the field maintained a steady pace and found themselves well in the running after 36 holes, Condy Roberson ran into considerable trouble and fired a second round score of 1-over-par, 37. His 36-hole total of 66 did no longer appear to be a threat. However, the tables reversed and as the leaders found their troubles in the remaining rounds, Condy settled down and maintained a steady pace with a third round 31 and close-out round of 29, good for an 18-under-par 126.
Finishing one stroke out at the end of 72 holes, good for a second place tie, were Ken Boy of Bristol, TN, and Frank Holt of Dallas, TX.
In the amateur division, the top two finishers were Bob Marcellino, the leader with 16-under-par 128, and Don Reynolds with a 136.
