Savannah's Bill Eyler Fires Record Shattering 63-Under Par To Win Southern Open

The putters of the Professional Putters Association shattered every existing PPA record in Savannah, GA today in the PPA $5,000 Southern Open. Savannah's Bill Eyler shot a 225, 63-under par, winning score to take first place prize money of $1,200. Eyler shattered the previous low scoring record for a PPA national tournament by 20 strokes. The old record of 245 was established earlier this season by Chuck Schafer of Long Island, NY in the $5,000 New Orleans Open back in February.

Only one stroke off the pace today was Neil Connor of Greenville, SC who finished at 226 to take second place of $750 on a course that the pros found exceptionally easy. New records were established as Connor fired a 10 for nine holes during the fourth round of play breaking previous low scoring records of 11 formerly held by Bob Williamson of Jacksonville, FL. During the fourth round of play, Jimmie Bryan of East Point, GA, and Connor each fired 23's to establish new scoring records for 18 holes in national tournament competition.

The Professional Putters Association, beginning its third season, felt the impact of the three year tournament competition and the many hours of practice put in by the pros as only those pros 17-under par or better qualified for the final day of competition.

Leading the amateur division was Jimmy Rossiter of Savannah, GA who fired a 244 for a 44-under-par score. Second place amateur was Howard Glassman of Savannah.

The next stop for the PPA tour will be the $3,000 High Point, NC Open, June 9-10.

Name players who failed to qualift for the second day of play in the Southern Open included Lee Weldy, 1961 National PPA Champion; Bob Williamson, 5th all-time leading money winner on the PPA Tour; and Pete Reed, defending champion of the Southern Open.
