Savannah Putter Wins $5,000 PPA International Open

Before a live television audience, estimated at 250,000, George Bearden of Savannah, GA, playing in the next to the last threesome, fired holes-in-one on the 141st and 142nd holes and parred the final two holes to win by one stroke in the $5,000 International Open held in Cleveland today.

The 28-year-old Bearden won his first national event after sharing first place with Pat Youman at 25-under par in the first day of play.

The first day of play was marred by torrential rains which forced a delay of play after only 15 putters had completed their qualifying rounds. The qualifying rounds were postponed until today. Those men who had failed to complete 72 holes of qualifying play begain action this morning at 9:00 o'clock and it was a long and exhausting day of putting which took its toll on the name putters, with names such as Neil Connor, leading money winner of the PPA, and Tracy Moore of Long Island, falling far behind the pace setter.

There was a second place tie at 43-under par by Daryl Freeman of Bristol and Bob Williamson of Savannah - each receiving $625 for their efforts.

Charles Gatewood of Mississippi City, MS, failed to qualify for the final rounds, his first tournament in which he failed to finish in the money.

Once again, the Southern pros dominated the field with Joe Mazie and Walt Moore being the only Ohio pros in the money. They were deadlocked for 10th place with two other qualifiers.
