Savannah School Boy Captures $3,000 PPA High Point Open

Dimple-cheeked Pat Youmans, 18-year-old blonde-headed youngster from Savannah, GA, snatched the halfway lead and went on to score a four-stroke victory in the $3,000 High Point Open sponsored by the Professional Putters Association.

The 165-pound, 5'10" Youmans fired 42 aces over the 144-hole route in posting a 45-under-par total of 243. He was presented a $1,000 check from PPA President Don Clayton at the conclusion of the two-day putting spectacle.

Youmans, appearing in only his second PPA meet, caught Charles Gatewood of Mississippi City, MS, on the 130th hole and aced four of the last 14 holes to win. Runner-up Gatewood pocketed $500 for his 247 finish. He shot 52 aces, one less than Youmans.

Youmans finished eight strokes out of money in his only other PPA appearance in his hometown Savannah Open last Saturday.

Joe Cox aced the first extra hole of a sudden death playoff with Glenn Burton to win the amateur championship after each tied with 264 totals at the end of 144 holes. Both were High Point entries.

The PPA Tour heads to Long Island, NY, for the $5,000 Eastern Open on the Putt-Putt course at 24 Hempstead Turnpike in Bethpage Saturday and Sunday, June 16 & 17.
