Williamson Wins $3,000 Bristol Open

PPA veteran Bob Williamson of Jacksonville, FL, stroked a 32-foot putt for a hole-in-one on the final hole today to win the $1,000 first place money in the $3,000 PPA Bristol Open. Williamson fired a 239 or 49-under par for the 144-hole putting tournament.

Neil Connor of Greenville, SC, was tied with Williamson at 42-under par after seven rounds and was playing 3 holes behind Williamsons' threesome. The entire gallery of approxiamtely 500 people followed the Connor threesome in, and on each of the final three holes Connor putted to within two inches of the cup but the ball would not drop for a hole-in-one which would have tied the score and forced a playoff. Connor was forced to settle for second place and $500. The $1,000 today moved Williamson to first place in the 1962 money winners with a total of $3,337.50. Williamsons' only previous win was first place in the 1960 Dayton Open.

Paul Garrison of Indianapolis, IN, winner of the 1962 National Championship in Cincinnati, OH last weekend, led the field through the first 18 holes of this tournament but was forced to settle for a 10th place tie in this event.

Third place and $300 went to Tracy Moore, a handsome putter from Long Island, NY, who is a gallery favorite with the feminine spectators, as he fired a 47-under-par 241.

The final four rounds of the tournament were marred by frequent downpours of rain that twice forced temporary delays of the tournament and left the putting surface glazed with water.

In the amateur division, first place honors went to Junior Richardson from Cayce, SC, who fired an eight round total of 267 or 21-under par. Edwin Koellein from Nashville, TN, was second with a 270 or 18-under par.

The tournament trail now leads to Houston, TX where on July 21 & 22 the pros will compete for $5,000 on the Putt-Putt Golf Course located at 3110 Old Spanish Trail.
